Pine Ridge Woman Sentenced for False Statement

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Pine Ridge, South Dakota, woman charged with False Statement was sentenced on November 30, 2012, by United States District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Sophia Yellow Boy, age 22, was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in custody, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Yellow Boy was indicted for False Statement by a federal grand jury on April 24, 2012. The charge related to Yellow Boy reporting to the Bureau of Indian Affairs that she had been forcibly raped on December 25, 2011, when she knew this statement and representation was false. Yellow Boy pled guilty to the charge on June 7, 2012.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant United States Attorney Heather Thompson prosecuted the case.

Yellow Boy was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
